Let’s Talk About Clams: A Delicious Journey Through History!

Clams have been enjoyed by humans for thousands of years, making them one of the oldest and most beloved seafood delicacies. These bivalve mollusks, known for their tender, juicy meat and briny flavor, are found in oceans, rivers, and lakes all around the world.

Clams have been a staple in coastal communities for centuries, dating back to ancient times. Archaeological evidence shows that clams were an important part of the diet for Native American tribes, particularly those living along the Atlantic coast of North America. Clamshells have been found in ancient middens (waste piles) dating back over 4,000 years, indicating that clamming was a vital activity for sustenance and trade.

In Europe, clams have also played a significant role in cuisine and culture. Ancient Romans loved clams and incorporated them into many of their feasts, often enjoying them raw or cooked in various sauces. During the Middle Ages, clams became a popular food for people living along the coasts of Europe, and they were often prepared in hearty soups and stews.

Today, clams are a beloved ingredient in many regional dishes across the globe. From the famous clam chowders of New England to the spicy clam pasta dishes of Italy, clams continue to be celebrated for their versatility and delicious flavor. Whether baked, steamed, grilled, or eaten raw on the half shell, clams offer a taste of the ocean that’s rich in history and full of flavor.

Ingredients:

  • 12 top neck clams (we used middle neck clams because they were fresh and available)

  • 1 cup plain panko breadcrumbs

  • ¼ cup chopped fresh Italian flat-leaf parsley

  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped garlic

  • ¼ cup olive oil

  • Juice of 1 lemon, plus one more for garnish

Recipe:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

  2. Scrub the clams under cold running water. Pry them open and gently separate the top and bottom shells, loosening the clam meat so it divides, with some remaining on the top shell and some on the bottom. You should have at least 16 clam shell halves to fill and bake. Arrange the clam-filled shells on a baking sheet and set aside.

  3. In a small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs, parsley, and garlic. Use a fork to stir in the olive oil until the mixture is moist but not oily. Set aside.

  4. Fill each clam shell with a portion of the breadcrumb mixture, spreading it evenly over the clam to the edge of the shell. The topping should be about 1/8 inch thick.

  5. Bake in the oven until the topping begins to brown slightly, about 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and adjust the temperature to broil. Place the clams under the broiler and cook until golden brown, about 2 minutes.

  6. Squeeze lemon juice over the hot clams and serve immediately.
