Ingredients on a wooden board: hot sauce, olive oil, two black bean cans, onion, egg, butter, spices, breadcrumbs, kitchen setting.

Black Beans

Black beans are the star of this recipe, offering a hearty texture and rich flavor. They’re a powerhouse of nutrition, providing protein, fiber, and a host of vitamins and minerals. Unlike traditional ground meat, black beans are cholesterol-free, making them a heart-healthy choice. Their mild taste makes them the perfect canvas to absorb the smoky, spicy, and savory seasonings in this recipe.

Frank’s RedHot Sauce

The tablespoon of Frank’s RedHot Sauce adds just the right amount of heat to these burgers, giving them a tangy kick that complements the creaminess of the beans. With a rich history, Frank’s is known for its bold yet balanced flavor profile. It’s the secret to taking your black bean patties from good to unforgettable.

Tips, Serving Suggestions, or Storage Advice

  • Prep Ahead: Make the patties in advance and refrigerate them for up to 24 hours before cooking. This helps them firm up and hold their shape.

  • Freeze for Later: Layer uncooked patties with parchment paper and freeze in an airtight container. Cook directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cook time.

  • Cheese Swap: Experiment with different cheeses like pepper jack for extra spice or Swiss for a creamy contrast.

  • Gluten-Free Option: Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and buns to cater to dietary restrictions.

  • Grill It: If you prefer smoky flavors, cook these patties on a grill using a well-oiled cast-iron griddle.

  • Spice Mix: Add cumin, smoked paprika, or garlic powder to the mixture for extra depth.

  • Make it Vegan: Replace the egg with a flaxseed “egg” (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed + 3 tablespoons water) and skip the cheese or use a plant-based alternative.

  • Toppings Galore: Get creative with toppings—try guacamole, caramelized onions, or roasted red peppers.

  • Toast the Buns: A quick butter-toast of your buns adds texture and flavor.

  • Leftover Love: Use leftover patties crumbled over salads or in wraps for a quick meal.

A veggie burger with melted cheese, lettuce, pickles, tomato, and peppers on a bun, served on a red plate next to roasted sweet potatoes.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans (15 oz each) low-sodium black beans, drained (do not rinse)

  • 1 cup seasoned breadcrumbs

  • 1/4 cup grated onion

  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder

  • 1 large egg

  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce (we recommend Frank’s RedHot)

  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

  • 4 slices cheese of your choice

  • 4 kaiser rolls or burger buns

  • Arugula or other leafy greens, for serving

  • Sliced tomatoes, for serving

  • Lite mayonnaise, for serving

  • Bread and Butter Pickles (try our recipe: link)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Patties:

    • Place the drained black beans in a large bowl. Using a fork, mash the beans until they are mostly broken up, leaving some whole beans for texture.

    • Add breadcrumbs, grated onion, chili powder, egg, salt, pepper, and hot sauce to the bowl. Stir until well combined. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes to firm up.

    • Form the mixture into 4–6 patties, shaping them slightly larger than the size of your buns to account for shrinkage during cooking.

  2. Cook the Patties:

    • Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium-low heat.

    • Place the patties in the skillet and cook for about 5 minutes on the first side. Flip the patties, top each one with a slice of cheese, and cook for another 5 minutes or until heated through.

    • If needed, cover the skillet with a lid to help melt the cheese.

  3. Toast the Buns (Optional):

    • Lightly butter the buns and toast them on a griddle or in a separate skillet until golden brown.

  4. Assemble the Burgers:

    • Spread lite mayonnaise on the bottom bun. For a spicy kick, mix a little hot sauce into the mayonnaise.

    • Layer the patty on the bun, followed by arugula, sliced tomatoes, and Bread and Butter Pickles.

    • Add the top bun, serve, and enjoy!

FAQ Section

Q: Can I use canned beans that are already seasoned?

A: Yes, but you may want to reduce the added salt and adjust the seasonings to avoid overpowering the flavor.

Q: What if my patties fall apart?

A: Ensure you’re not rinsing the beans, as the starch helps bind the mixture. Letting the mixture sit for 5 minutes also helps it firm up.

Q: Can I bake the patties instead of frying them?

A: Absolutely! Bake them at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Q: Can I make these gluten-free?

A: Yes, substitute the breadcrumbs and buns with gluten-free options.

Q: How can I add extra protein?

A: Mix in a tablespoon of chia seeds or nutritional yeast for a protein boost.
