Yesterday evening, after a long and fulfilling day in the office, we decided it was time to unwind. A date night was just what we needed! It had been a while since we last visited Fernbank Public House on Bridge Road, and with winter in full swing, we knew their cozy indoor seating would be the perfect escape from the chilly air. Since the space is limited during colder months, we wisely called ahead to check the seating availability. Our timing couldn’t have been better—when we arrived, two perfect seats awaited us at the bar.

As soon as we sat down, we were greeted by Kelly, the bartender extraordinaire. Her energy was infectious, and her ability to manage the entire bar while juggling multiple tables was nothing short of impressive. Friendly and attentive, Kelly set the tone for what would be an unforgettable dining experience.

Fernbank Public House is the definition of cozy charm. This smaller, inviting space exudes a calm, relaxed vibe that makes you feel right at home the moment you step inside. Just past the front door, the bar greets you on the left—a stunning wood centerpiece with comfortable seating that’s perfectly spaced, ensuring you never feel cramped. Beyond the bar lies the dining room, an intimate area with 8 to 12 tables, each surrounded by comfortable chairs that encourage leisurely meals and good conversation. The walls are adorned with intriguing artwork that adds character and warmth, making every glance a delight. The atmosphere is welcoming and familiar, like being part of the family, creating the perfect setting for a laid-back meal or a special night out.

Drinks to Set the Mood

Drinks on a dark table: a glass of red juice, red wine, and water with ice. Menus titled Fernbank are visible. Cozy dining ambiance.

We started with drinks: a local blackberry sour beer for Josh and a glass of the house cabernet sauvignon for Tara. The beer was refreshingly crisp, with a delightful fruity tang, while the cabernet was smooth and perfectly balanced. It felt like the ideal start to our evening.

A Memorable Appetizer

For our appetizer, we couldn’t resist the Mozzarella Pearls—hand-breaded fresh mozzarella served with a side of their house-made red sauce. These golden-brown bites were fried to perfection: crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside. The red sauce complemented the pearls beautifully, offering just the right touch of tangy goodness.

Entrées That Delivered Big Flavors | FERNBANK PUBLIC HOUSE

For his main course, Josh ordered the Braised Beef Sandwich. Every bite was a testament to the kitchen’s attention to detail. The slow-cooked braised beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender, paired with cheddar cheese, house-pickled red onions, and creamy mayo. The sandwich came with a side of au jus, which added a rich, savory depth when soaked into the bread. The accompanying French fries were cooked to golden perfection, and the candied jalapeños on the side brought the heat. Spicy? Yes! But their sweet undertones kept us reaching for more.

Tara opted for the Hot Honey and Pimento Sandwich—a true standout. The hand-breaded chicken was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and loaded with layers of flavor. Pimento cheese, applewood-smoked bacon, candied jalapeños, and a drizzle of hot honey combined to create a sandwich that was sweet, spicy, creamy, and smoky all at once.

A Look Back at a Favorite Salad

On a previous visit, Tara tried the B.T.A Salad, and it remains a favorite. Featuring applewood-smoked bacon, cherry tomatoes, and fresh avocado over mixed greens with a house-made buttermilk dressing, this salad was a refreshing yet indulgent option. Adding steak elevated it even further—the meat was cooked to perfection, and the greens were crisp and fresh.

Why Fernbank Stands Out

Fernbank Public House has been a gem in Charleston since its opening in August 2023, thanks to the vision of owners Mike Medley and Brian Henderson. Their combined experience in the restaurant industry shines through in every detail. Mike’s background managing Lola’s and Brian’s experience at Sam’s Uptown Café—both staples of Charleston’s dining scene—have clearly informed their approach to creating Fernbank.

The result? A warm, welcoming space with elevated takes on burgers, sandwiches, and more. Whether you’re in the mood for bold, flavorful dishes or simply want to enjoy a local beer in a cozy setting, Fernbank delivers every time.

We’re so thankful to Mike and Brian for bringing this incredible restaurant to Bridge Road. If you’re in Charleston and craving a memorable meal, Fernbank Public House is the place to be. Trust us, you won’t leave disappointed!
