Pepperoni

Pepperoni is an iconic cured meat that brings bold, slightly spicy, and smoky flavors to any dish. Traditionally made from a mix of pork and beef, it’s seasoned with paprika, garlic, and other spices to create its signature taste. The fat content in pepperoni ensures that it crisps up beautifully when baked, adding both texture and depth to these pinwheels.

Crescent Roll Dough

Crescent roll dough is a lifesaver for quick and easy appetizers! This pre-made dough has a buttery, flaky texture and bakes up golden brown every time. Its soft, pliable nature makes it ideal for rolling and sealing, ensuring a perfect pinwheel shape. Plus, it saves time compared to making homemade dough, making this recipe super convenient.

Recipe Inspiration & Origin:

The idea for these Pepperoni Pinwheels comes from classic pepperoni pizza—but with a fun, bite-sized twist! Instead of dealing with pizza dough and lengthy rising times, we use crescent roll dough for a quick, flaky alternative. These pinwheels are reminiscent of pizza rolls but with a homemade touch.

Inspired by appetizers found at Italian-American restaurants, these pinwheels make for a great party snack, much like garlic knots or mozzarella sticks. Plus, they’re perfect for kids and adults alike—who doesn’t love a cheesy, pepperoni-filled bite?

Golden pizza rolls topped with herbs on a wooden board, surrounded by shredded cheese and pepperoni slices. Warm, appetizing setting.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup diced pepperoni

  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

  • ¼ teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1 egg, separated

  • 1 tube (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent roll dough

Instructions:

  1. Preheat & Prep: Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

  2. Mix the Filling: In a small bowl, combine the diced pepperoni, shredded mozzarella, dried oregano, and egg yolk.

  3. Prepare Dough: Unroll the crescent roll dough and separate it into four rectangles. Pinch the perforations together to seal.

  4. Assemble: Evenly spread the pepperoni mixture over each rectangle, leaving about ¼ inch from the edges.

  5. Roll & Slice: Starting from the short side, roll each rectangle into a log and pinch the seam to seal. Cut each roll into six slices.

  6. Brush & Bake: Place the pinwheels cut-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Lightly whisk the egg white until foamy, then brush it over the tops of the pinwheels.

  7. Bake: Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.

  8. Serve & Store: Serve warm with marinara or your favorite dipping sauce. Refrigerate any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer for best results.
